Rebecca was the product of two sets of parents. The first, her biological parents, were drug addicts. Her egg donor used while she was pregnant, leaving Rebecca mentally challenged to some extent.
The second were a good, upstanding Christian couple who, up until then, remaind childless, although they had fostered many children. One night, they got a call asking if they wanted to adopted a newborn girl. That wasn't Rebecca, but three years later, she would become Rebecca's younger sister when they adopted her from a group home in the mountains.
The story should have ended there with a happy ending and a safe, happy, mundane life for Rebecca. Instead, it goes on with a child of her own in her 30s, torn from her arms by the adoptive parents who treated her like a slave, and placed in a shakey, neverending whirlwind of a home of two smalltime Christian influencers who use the baby for content.
I wish this was fiction. But today I opened Instagram and saw an unfamiliar face pop up. It was the child that was taken from Rebecca. I thought the influencers used bots or bought an account that I had previously followed, because why the fuck am I following someone who follows that shit ass Kaitlin Bennett? But then I realized what was going on.
For two years, that couple only posted photos with her face covered, and I was happy because I thought that meant they wouldn't exploit her. But no. The adoption process is finalized, and they can legally post her wherever they want.
When Rebecca told me she was pregnant, I tried really, really hard to convince my husband that we should adopt the baby. Rebecca's adoptive mother had already decided for her that she wouldn't keep the baby, and she decided who adopted her. Even if she had let us, I know we couldn't have afforded another child, but I was heartbroken. I wanted Rebecca to remain in her daughter's life. It wasn't fair for her family to make that choice for her. They used her mental issues against her. They refused to help her if the help wasn't strictly getting rid of the child in a godly way. They thought taking the child away would drive her back to them and make her live a more "godly" life. But it did the opposite.
Now I'm terrified that those people are just going to exploit that child for the next 16 years, and I'm not looking forward to seeing what turns her life is going to take. I hope they let Rebecca have a role in her life, but I'm afraid they'll eventually just exploit that, too.
I wish people wouldn't post their children online so publicly.
